A Quick Note on the Dismissal of Shirley Sherrod, etc.

When I get one of those screeds that go around, the very first thing that I do is go to, for instance, Snopes or Truth or Fiction, etc., to see if there’s any truth to it.  That’s just me.

I mention this because Shirley Sherrod just got “swift-boated” because the NAACP didn’t verify what actually was said at an NAACP meeting before they censured her, which stimulated the Administration to demand her resignation before the Administration fact-checked the allegation.  The thing is that once you’ve been pulled out of the rational world and through the looking glass there’s really no good way to take it all back; once the trigger is pulled it’s a little late to say how sorry you are and so on and so forth.  You’re an idiot and you’ve hurt an innocent person.

It’s 2010.  There are wing-nuts everywhere, a few of them with the skill – and several with the means to hire unscrupulous people with the skill – to produce misinformation.  And this incident would have happened 24 years ago?  I think you had time to check the facts.

I felt the same way about it. The worst is though the truth is now out about what Breitbart did, how Fox steamrolled it, the mistake of the NAACP, the guys who did this won as they made Obama look bad. It’s his own fault for not checking it out before as you said pulling the trigger. He better learn those guys are not his friends. He cannot make them believe in him ever. So he needs to stop reacting so fast to what they throw out as they throw out plenty. It’s disappointing although I like how the ‘white’ farmers came forth immediately to tell how she saved their farm. It was actually (if they had not clipped the soundbite) a story of racial coming together. I only hope that gets widespread coverage on Fox or is that dreaming…

  2. I think there is such a DELUGE of information out there, particularly in the form of video “sound bytes” and edited clips, it’s a wonder any public figure allows their statements to be recorded. Most are carefully worded yet even then the occasional gaffe makes it to the nightly news. Add to that the short attention span of the general public, assessing the message within it’s intended context is rarely afforded.

It was recently noted that Sarah Palin only accepts invitations to speak on Hannity’s program and Fox News. She doesn’t want any “gotcha” moments, not that she still doesn’t supply a litany of banality even in those protected venues.

Latest news: the Obama admin is going to re-examine.

Incredible — hard to believe someone wouldn’t have checked out this story. On the other hand, tragic to say, but not believing what you read or hear is more true today than ever. Ironic when we consider this is supposed to be an information society — what kind of information???

Oh, this whole thing just frosts my cake. I was so angry when they fired her, and then when I found out that they didn’t even BOTHER to make sure that a blogger got things right, and that FOX reported it correctly? Idiots. My mother raised me to question all politicians, and to think they’ll break your heart sooner or later. Why does it have to happen so damn soon nowadays? I would have liked more time before Obama broke my heart. Though truthfully, he broke it before he was even in office. Perhaps because I kinda believed in him, which is a first for me.
