Thoughts on Reinstating the Draft

I was over on Rainy Day Things a little bit ago  where she reminded me about the crazies and craziness that got – and kept – us in the war in Iraq (instead of focusing our efforts in locating and dealing with the people who actually attacked us on 9/11/2001).  I was also reminded of this story that popped up on my Navy Times news feed this morning wherein a retired Marine Corps Reserve Major General, Arnold Punaro, advocates scaling back on pay and benefits for active duty military.  He refers to the military pension benefit in particular as a “pre-volunteer-force retirement system.”

Looking back on every dumb-ass war that didn’t necessarily call for fighting that I could think of, it occurs to me that there was no draft at the time. (I included the Spanish-American War.)  With no disrespect to the kids who show up because of their sense of duty, these are the wars that are fought for us primarily by kids for whom a few thousand dollars is the way out or the way up from their situations, a path to citizenship perhaps.  We could probably get them to do it for less, right?

If VietNam hadn’t been fought with draftees but openly with minorities and the economically/socially disadvantaged, how long would we have let that go on?

From now on I’m pretty much automatically opposed to any war that you won’t send your kids or grand kids to.  If we reinstate the draft then we might be just a little more mindful of what we’re asking people to do for us, and of what they deserve for doing it.
