About Capt. Honors’ Situation

I’m not about to apologize for Capt. Honors; that’s all on him. I will say that I think he’s being swift-boated.
Apparently, four years ago, during the process of making a series of videos for General Military Training, he made a number of ill-advised and intemperate remarks. Apparently these have been obtained and re-edited into several minutes of material that represent him as a perverted lunatic; and, for all I know, he just might be.
I am appreciative that I wasn’t being taped while I was conducting General Military Training. It took me a few years after I left the Navy to rehabilitate my speech patterns. I’ve never been a homophobe, but my language was… salty.

My other comment is on the practice of letting naval aviators command ships: I think it shows questionable judgment. Those guys are pilots. For the most part, they stopped maturing when they were 16 and got the keys to the car, and they’ve been skirting trouble ever since. Giving them the keys to a major command is generally nuts. Just look at John McCain!
Anyway, Capt. Honors made those videos early in his XO tour and nobody since then (his CO, the Command Master Chief, Fleet Training Group, etc.) has brought this up until four years later when Enterprise is deploying for Afghanistan? Bullshit.

One Response to About Capt. Honors’ Situation

You are so right. I was married for 28 years to a former submarine sailor and those guys raised cussin’ to an art form and took pride in their work. Fortunately, when he rejoined civilian life he recovered sufficiently to be in polite company mostly. That said, I don’t think anyone should be held responsible for past indiscretions.

I agree with your take on pilots. My daughter was an aviation tech and a plane captain during her eight years in the Navy. She once said, “Pilots aren’t really officers; they just drive airplanes.” which gave me different perspective on them. Since she has always she tended to be pretty much spot on — if not brutal — in her pronouncements, I can’t imagine why anyone would be given command of a ship when the only part of one they understand is the flight deck on a carrier.
