Folks around here have been talking a lot about Chick-Fil-A and Dan Cathy’s statement to some religious tabloid about his opinion against same-sex marriage, and it’s getting a little old for me. Mr. Cathy is in the business of selling chicken sandwiches in the Bible Belt; he could do a lot worse than suck up to the fundamentalists in his market.
This is the South and in North Carolina they just passed Amendment One by a huge margin. Over in Waynesville there’s a 17-year-old kid named Ben Greene who was apparently moved to burn a cross on the lawn of a 14-year-old girl, and he’s still working out with his high school football team. How’s that for sportsmanship? The school says they’ll keep him on the team until it’s proven in court that he did anything wrong. They turn out bigots around here like Krispy Kreme turns out doughnuts. I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with all the folks out there today demonstrating, but there have been cars lined up all day to buy sandwiches there so…
The thing is that Dan Cathy was playing to his base, and he hit a home run. I won’t eat there, but I haven’t eaten there in awhile and I’m pretty sure he hasn’t noticed.
I would also point out that the only reason we know about Dan Cathy is that he came out – if you will – in public, but what do we really know about any of the companies we support on a daily basis? If we really cared then I think we’d be better informed. Demonstrating against this guy’s company because he was smart/dumb enough to reveal himself feels more like posturing to me, and he’ll make a crap-load of money today.

Well said. One has to wonder about our country– and not just sometimes.
