I Think We’re Over-Thinking or Not Thinking At All

Okay, about all of this killing we’re doing… and I totally get that it’s different when we kill them, but I bet it doesn’t feel different to the ones being killed.

First I think we need to look in the mirror because we do act on our prejudices, and you can’t base a rational strategy on an irrational premise. Crazy is going to stay crazy.

I don’t say that we’re bigots or whatever, but let’s admit that the deaths in France hit us harder than the deaths in Africa because we’re of European ancestry. It’s not fair and it pisses off people of African ancestry, but the attacks in Paris happened to people like us. Let’s own that and put it aside for at least a while.

I’d like to see us put aside the religious rhetoric. I’m convinced that religion has very little if anything to do with terrorism if only because everybody does the same damn things regardless of their religious cover story. They do this crap for the same reason that Capone wanted to take over Chicago. Luciano wanted to take over the mob, and (pick a dictator) wanted to take over the world: a lust for power.

When Ted Kaczynski was sending out those bombs we hunted him down like the dog he is and locked him up for life (8 of them). When bin Laden engineered 9/11 we declared war on two countries and an ideology, and got thousands of our own people killed before ten years later we finally hunted him down like the dog he was and killed him. Now, hours after the attacks in Paris (and 7 months after the attack in Kenya) we’re in another full-throated tizzy about America’s response to Islamist extremism.

These are crimes. We have cops. The whole world has cops and some of them, many if not most of them I’d say, are pretty good at what they do. Find out who engineered these crimes and where they are and take them out in as surgically precise a manner as possible. Don’t piss off every innocent civilian within a thousand miles just because they have different beliefs and wear man-dresses instead of pants.

Will my approach stop “terrorism?” No.

Has anything stopped crime so far? Is there any population in the history of mankind where everyone has stayed in their lane and followed the rules? We don’t have to stop trying and we don’t have to be stupid about it. The dumbest person I know had to admit that you can’t kill all of your enemies, especially when you go around making new enemies everywhere besides the widows and orphans.

I am guessing on this but maybe the concern for Islam comes out of centuries of those following that religion coming out of the Middle East and invading Europe and neighboring countries. From Mohammad on they have had quite a few times of expansionism that ended up with wars fought on other people’s soil. The last would be the Islamic Ottoman Empire which although it was tolerant of other religions in the nations it occupied, it did take over a lot of the world at various times from 1299 to WWI. Some of why the Middle East got broken up as it was by the European nations was due to that Empire and what it had done. I believe it was in
Turkey where it massacred a lot of Christian Armenians. I don’t know the whole history of it as well as maybe I should but I see that this past history might explain the concern everytime you have the Islamic peoples involved in attacks or in the case of the recent immigration the thought maybe it’s a new kind of invasion. Basically if the people of Islamic faiths came into countries and integrated, kept their religion but didn’t threaten those who didn’t follow it (and that includes those who are not fundamentalist Muslims) there might be a lot less suspicion and fear.

And ISIS is claiming it is the new Caliphate which is a big deal to those Muslims who expect that to be a sign of Armageddon. I am suspicious, of course, of all religions 😉

There are any number of possible rationalizations including the Crusades. Judeo-Christian sects and Islam claim the same homeland and they all want the world for themselves. At the end of the day what they share is a desire to have the world for themselves and I doubt that any of that has much to do with their vision of the hereafter.
As soon as either side brings their religion into it we’ve stopped talking about the real issues and are down the rabbit hole. Recognizing all of that, we really cannot keep playing tit for tat.

The thing is the religion does play into it. Why would people support Ben Carson for President with zero experience in politics and questions regarding his veracity? One reason– his religious claims. It happens all the time. I think it explains some of these young people who throw away their lives in suicide bombings. It’s not about God. It’s about religion and the things I’ve read about how ISIS is manipulating people to come there to fight for them– it’s about the new Caliphate. Not much different than those who think Jesus is coming back to right wrongs. The older I get, the less I like religions. Not to say some people don’t do good things in them but the basis for them also leads to extremism and things like bombing abortion clinics.

  4. Harold says:

At the grass-root level religion absolutely plays a role. The guy who straps on the suicide vest is a committed believer, whatever his religion. The guy who plans the operation, the financing, the logistics, he’s just another murderer; I suspect a coward who manipulates others to face the physical risks. Good people do good things, they don’t commit mass murders. I don’t know whether Carson is touched by an angel or bat-shit crazy but I never met a neurosurgeon I wanted to spend five minutes with anyway.

lol Harold. I haven’t ever known one but will take your word for it if he’s an example anyway. They are hopeful that his last stupid talk will make him out of the running but who does that leave on that side??? Some say they may draft Romney at the convention, not that he’s an answer to me. IF though Trump has it wrapped up with delegates, they won’t be able to do that.

I think the planners may well be the ones who want power and think they are going to be the Caliphate and lead a new Muslim empire. You know sort of like the Ben Carson and Donald Trumps for personalities 😉

“Pinpoint surgery” seems a more effective way to deal with these terrorists we’re dealing with today, since they so often embed themselves in the midst of innocent civilians. Certainly if we identify training camps or large groups of fighters, given how their numbers have grown in a number of different countries, then effective traditional military force could be applied — in ways other than a grand army of U.S. boots on the ground. These are different times. This calls for a different type of war. More effort needs to be taken to eliminate the terrorists income sources — especially the major one, oil, as I understand.

I’m glad to see more Middle East countries being involved in actual fighting for their homeland but they need to do more of it if they don’t want to live in such a barbaric society. Some of them may actually have to try to get along on at least one issue — to combat terrorism. We certainly shouldn’t be expected to send our sons and daughters to die if those countries don’t care enough to fight for themselves. But, yes, we do have to keep the fight from our shores.

Religions are here and not likely to cease existence in the immediate future, if ever. I think they need to make more effort to contribute to being part of eliminating terrorists.
Many religions seem to have extremists, including those who identify themselves as Christian or Muslim, willing to kill those who don’t share their beliefs. I think all the religions the extremists claim to represent need to be more outspoken disavowing the actions of those extremists who kill or maim. Meanwhile, the religions must focus on tolerance or acceptance of each other. Perhaps they can become more influential with some disillusioned youth who seem to be vulnerable to the extremists ideology. We have to reach the hearts and minds of people — giving them hope for the future. If, for some people, a religion provides that strength and comfort, then we need all the support they can provide along with other actions our nation takes to keep us secure.
