Article 88. Contempt Toward Officials

Being an officer in the Armed Forces of the United States is tough.  It’s not meant to be a profession for the faint of heart.  It also calls for a degree of political correctness that I have never had.

As an enlisted man, my job was simply to obey the lawful orders of my superior officers and non-commissioned officers, and to respect their authority at all times.  A commissioned officer is also required to mind his manners (and his tongue) regarding our civilian leadership, specifically: the President, the Vice President, members of Congress, SecDef, military department Secretaries and the Secretary of Transportation (for the Coasties).  That’s codified in the Uniform Code of Military Justice and is supposed to be reinforced in General Military Training annually.

I am sorry that Gen. McChrystal has stepped on his dick.  Personally, I think the Marine strategy of working in the countryside makes more sense than his fortifying the cities, but I was never paid for my thinking.

The President hasn’t asked me what I think about Gen. McChrystal, but the bottom line, to me, is whether or not he can fully rely on Gen. McChrystal to be his physical presence in Afghanistan; can he trust that Gen. McChrystal will subordinate himself to National Command Authority given his recent insubordination.  I wouldn’t keep him.

I think you said it well and what I think also. When Obama talks to him, he has to evaluate whether McChrystal feels the way his subordinates do and whether his disdain for suits will limit his ability to do the job. I don’t envy Obama s whatever he decides he will be criticized for it now. He didn’t create this although maybe more time with the general could have helped. It’s not Obama has any other problems on his plate 😉 Basically I think if he feels he can trust him, he should keep him because it will endanger the surge probably to let him go right now. If McChrystal learned from it, he might be a better general. That’s a big IF. I also wonder what McChrystal does next if he resigns from the military. You know who will welcome him with open arms after this interview. He can work for the contractors and make big bucks or he can run for office!

I’m with you 110%!!!!!! Well said!!!!!!!

  3. President Obama is aware of his flagging popularity. The Conservatives are barking at his heels waiting for him to slip up; they already dog him as weak on national security for wanting to try terrorists in civilian, rather than military, courts. (Which Bush did as well, but the hypocrites choose to ignore). Had Obama allowed Gen. McChrystal to remain in command the conservatives would have yet another brick to hurl at him as weak.
In a sense this was probably a good thing, then… the President reasserting his command and control. And the change in command may even segue into a strategy that could lead out out from under the Afghan war.
