I’m Home

I’m not going to write a diary about it, but I “just” got back from the Eastern North Carolina flooding where I worked as a Disaster Assessment supervisor with the American Red Cross, and it was the best job I’ve had since I left the Navy.  (I actually got home Monday night.)

Working with a bunch of people doing a job we all presumably love – because we’re volunteers – is so powerfully invigorating that 12+-hour days strung together feel do-able at the time.  Where was I since Monday?  Sleeping it off and playing with my dog!

Glad that you had such a positive experience, Harold. Obviously you are listed as IP/DA/SV (or MN) in DSHR. It would be interesting to know your other preferred positions.
Unlike you, as an ER/LG/MN, when I go on assignment, I am usually surrounded by paid staff – local, state, federal employees. The few times that I’ve served in the DRO HQ have been eye opening and informative. Some of our volunteers are just flat impressive (in which category you probably fall).

    Thank you, Robin.
Cop Car, I’ve gone out before as CLS/CC, MC/FF/ERV (still my 3rd choice) and as LOG/PRO (because that’s what I’d been doing for the chapter when it became a DR). I’ve done ER/LG in EOCs and at ICPs for local responses in California, and it’s my second choice for DSHR.
I worked with the DA/MN at HQ for my first day and a half on this job and the last two days (HQ moved up to our site) and learned a lot about what she and the job did with the data we were sending in. I appreciated the experience, but I’m not sure that I’m HQ material at this point.
The Chapter wants me to consider doing ER/LG, and I enjoyed my previous experiences. Somebody needs to do it and I know that I can, but I have to think a bit about coming out of the field.

It seems to me that you would fit very well into the ESF6 cadre for your region – now ER/LG specializing in ESF6. That is my #1 choice and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with the FEMA folks. Obviously, you would fit into any of the ER/LG positions, I should think!
P.S. I got to work with some of your ESF6 cadre during the Wild Fires in 2007. Enjoyable assignment (actually, your ESF6 cadre were doing the work – I was there to mentor.)
